What’s the problem?

Inequality, the root cause of global unrest and political instability, has reached historic levels around the world. Our economies are deliberately designed to favour the richest at the expense of everyone else, allowing vast accumulation of assets while many go without. If history is a fair judge, this situation will not end well for anyone, including the wealthy.

Today, 7 out of 10 people live in countries that are more unequal than they were 30 years ago and the top 1% own half of all the world’s wealth. The Covid pandemic has increased this inequality dramatically and now, for the first time in decades, extreme poverty is on the rise. Over half the world’s population lives on less than $5.50 a day.  Meanwhile, the world’s billionaires have seen their fortunes increase by $10.2 trillion and scores of corporations have profiteered from the pandemic.

People all over the world are beginning to recognise the need for a more just economy through fair taxation of income, wealth, and capital; fair reward for work; redistribution for a just and green recovery; and an urgent need for equal political representation so our democracies are no longer unduly influenced by a wealthy elite. The pandemic has created further urgency for influencing both the national and global political economies, and the time for influence is now.
