A Closer Look: 2025 in review

We hope that you and those close to you enjoyed a peaceful and joy-filled holiday season, and are looking forward to the start of the new year.

For our last Closer Look of 2025, we wanted to reflect on the year we’ve had by sharing our top five most read Closer Looks of the year, along with a few of our personal favorites. We’ll also share some notable hits we had in our traditional earned media and social media campaigns.

Closer Looks

If you can believe it, we sent out 47 Closer Look emails in total to our thousands of subscribers this year. The top five most read Closer Looks of 2025 were:

We Must Draw The Line (January 22): This Closer Look highlighted the two products, a letter and a poll, that we released for the 55th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Over 370 millionaires and billionaires from 22 countries signed our open letter, We Must Draw The Line, calling on world leaders at Davos to tax the super rich. Meanwhile, the poll that we commissioned among millionaires in G20 countries found overwhelming support for the idea of taxing the super rich to reduce inequality.

Democrats need a tax life raft in Trump’s flood zone (January 29): This Closer Look discussed the 2017 GOP Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and the way it disproportionately benefited wealthy people like us. This was in the lead-up to the “Super Bowl of Tax” that took place in 2025 with the expiring provisions of the TCJA, which ended with Republicans’ notorious passage of their One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Republicans are on tax offense for Team Rich (May 21): This Closer Look was written during the first battle of the “Super Bowl of Tax.” It outlined some of the major tax provisions of the House GOP’s first draft of their party’s bill and the ways in which it showered the wealthy and corporations with tax breaks at the expense of the poor. It also detailed a legislative alternative—The “Cost of Living” Tax Cut Act, one of the four pieces of legislation that make up our MONEY Agenda—that Democrats could adopt to put up a formidable defense to Republicans.

“Recession indicators” are right on the money (June 26): This Closer Look highlighted how high the cost of living has become over the last few years in America and how “recession indicators” that were trending over the summer on social media were on to something. It also discussed some of the real driving forces behind rising prices and how Trump’s tariffs would make life even more expensive, and again highlighted our “Cost of Living” Tax Cut Act as a strong legislative alternative.

Here’s how lopsided the GOP megabill really is (August 13): This Closer Look worked to get the full truth out about how lopsided the GOP’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act is in favor of the rich by highlighting four less-known provisions of the bill: the qualified small business stock exclusion; Opportunity Zones; a special tax break for oil and gas companies; and an extension of a rum tax rebate for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

If you’re interested, here are some other Closer Looks from 2025 that we feel were particularly informative and deserve an honorable mention: Philanthropy can’t save the world. Taxes can. (May 15); Honor Juneteenth by ending the subminimum wage (June 19); Tax the rich. Save the planet (literally). (July 16); Millionaires won’t leave if you tax them (July 23); Our Money Vs. Your Sweat (September 10); and Ghosts, witches, vampires…and broligarchs?! (October 29).

Earned media

In 2025, across our three branches in the US, UK, and Canada, the Patriotic Millionaires received a grand total of 5,748 media hits in 92 countries. This includes opinion pieces written by our members, feature-length profile pieces about our work, and critical mentions of our organization.

Here are some of our most high-profile hits from the year:

Chuck Collins, a Patriotic Millionaire and one of our Board Members, even published a book this year: Burned by Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power Are Ruining Our Lives and Planet. Detailed in Chuck’s signature style and voice, he makes the powerful case about the inordinate influence that billionaires have over our lives these days. This is a must-read in the historically unequal moment we’re living in!

Social media

We also blew things out of the park on our social media channels. If you don’t already follow us on X, Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok, be sure to do so!

Conclusion

2025 certainly brought its fair share of setbacks. It’s hard to believe that Trump was inaugurated a year ago, and even harder to fully appreciate all the harm he and Republicans have managed to wreak on the economy over the last eleven months, particularly with their disastrous tax bill.

But for us, the silver lining to this year is that we made immense progress in spreading our message far and wide. Millions of people have opened our emails, seen our big media hits, and viewed our viral social media posts. More people than ever know who we are and what we’re all about and believe in our mission. We still have a ways to go in achieving economic and political justice, but the fact that we have more momentum behind us than ever before is definitely worth celebrating.

Thank you for following our work in 2025. We can’t wait to keep pushing to tax the rich, pay the people, and spread the power in 2026!
