It’s not often we need to email you on a Monday, so if we are, it has to be for a good reason. And believe us, we have one: May 11, 2025 marked the official launch of Patriotic Millionaires Canada!
This is the third chapter of Patriotic Millionaires, in addition to our US and UK branches. Patriotic Millionaires Canada has been a work in progress for some time now, and we are thrilled to have a (growing!) group of wealthy peers across the Northern Border join us in our global fight for economic and political justice.
Patriotic Millionaires Canada will have its own membership and board, but its mission will be the same as ours and our UK cousins: Tax the rich to address the crisis of extreme inequality and the harm it wreaks on the economy, democracy, and the planet. Similarly, it will advance this mission through reshaping the narrative on how economically successful people view taxes, and by lobbying government officials to change laws and build a more effective tax code.
The launch of Patriotic Millionaires Canada is timely, given the recent 2024 elections where politicians from the Conservative and Liberal parties vowed to cut taxes for middle- and high-income earners alike. Inequality is also on the rise in Canada: Statistics Canada reported that the gap between the rich and poor in Canada reached its highest level on record in 2024.
The founding members of Patriotic Millionaires Canada include business owners, philanthropists, lawyers, tech entrepreneurs, and others, and their reach is already growing as their public launch brings forward other wealthy Canadians who are finally finding their peers.
Patriotic Millionaires Canada has already made quite a splash in the media. Yesterday, CBC News published a full-length profile piece about the group—which was the weekend’s most popular story. They also had a follow-up feature on CBC Radio and a TV segment on CBC News Network. Members have also been busy speaking with reporters and radio hosts in Ontario, Calgary, on SiriusXM, and elsewhere.
We are thrilled that a group of our wealthy peers in Canada recognizes the global problem that is extreme wealth. We talk endlessly about the problems that billionaires and multimillionaires pose to our way of life here at home in the US. But the harms that flow from extreme wealth know no borders. Globe-trotting ultra-wealthy oligarchs use their power and influence in ways that threaten the stability of economies and democracies the world over—not to mention the very existence of our shared planet.
Global problems require global solutions, and in the case of global economic inequality, the solution is simple: international coordination on taxing ultra-wealthy individuals and combatting tax havens. In our increasingly connected world, any country that wishes to achieve tax fairness at home must, by definition, cooperate with other countries in sharing tax information, resources, and capabilities.
The launch of Patriotic Millionaires Canada is a monumental achievement in our movement’s international work. In the past, our US and UK chapters have worked with allies on international advocacy efforts, including around the G20, G7, United Nations, and the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting (“Davos”). In February, we also joined forces with over 50 organizations to start the #TaxTheSuperRich Movement.
They launched yesterday, but Patriotic Millionaires Canada isn’t wasting any time supporting our larger international efforts. In June, Patriotic Millionaires Canada will co-host an event with partners like Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Québec, and Canadians for Tax Fairness in Ottawa. The event will focus on Canada hosting the G7, how it is an opportunity to fill a global leadership gap to combat wealth inequality, and how political leaders should take advantage of it to push for the need for international tax reform.
