Patriotic Millionaires Demand Menendez’s Replacement Be a Progressive Tax Champion

“Whoever replaces Senator Menendez on the Senate Finance Committee should commit to voting against any legislation that would give yet more tax cuts to the ultra-rich and corporations.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Senate received Senator Robert Menendez’s (D-NJ) resignation letter. Menendez’s resignation, effective August 20, follows his conviction in a bribery scandal last week.

In response, Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:

“Senator Menendez exemplifies why Americans have lost faith in our system of government. Patriotic Millionaires welcome his departure from the Senate.

His absence will create a vacancy on the Senate Finance Committee, and it is imperative that Majority Leader Schumer and Senate Democrats elevate a replacement to the committee who will fiercely advocate for taxing the ultra-wealthy and corporations. This committee – and the senator who fills the vacancy – will have a crucial role to play in ensuring the 2017 Trump tax scam expires at the end of next year.
