House Votes to Pad Corporate Profits, Leave Sick Constituents Behind
“To look at the American healthcare system and decide that its single biggest problem is that medical device companies aren’t making enough money is just absurd beyond all reason.”
Washington, DC – This afternoon, in response to the House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s tax on manufacturers and importers of medical devices, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and former Blackrock managing director Morris Pearl issue the following statement:
“Today’s vote is just another piece of evidence that when members of Congress are forced to choose between their donors’ profits and the wellbeing of their constituents, they’re going to choose their donors every single time. To look at the American healthcare system and decide that its single biggest problem is that medical device companies aren’t making enough money is just absurd beyond all reason.
There are millions of Americans who can’t afford the prescription drugs or basic healthcare services they need to survive, but Congress does nothing. Virtually every member of Congress has at least some constituents whose lives would quite literally be saved if Congress were to better regulate drug costs, but because sick poor people don’t have millions of dollars to spend on lobbying, they’re out of luck. Today’s vote is just another sign of how twisted this Congress’ priorities are, and is a reminder that the corroding influence of corporate money in our politics is quite literally killing people.“
