One Year Since HR 1 Passed the House: “An Absolute Disgrace” That Bill Lies Dormant in the Senate
“HR 1 should be a no-brainer for anyone with a stake in our democracy.”
Washington, DC – Today, Sunday, March 8, 2020, marks the one year anniversary of the passage of HR 1, the For the People Act, in the House of Representatives. This landmark bill focuses on expanding and securing voting rights, in addition to sharply limiting the role of money in our political process. As of this date, it has not yet been brought to a vote in the Senate.
In response, members of the Patriotic Millionaires issued the following statements:
“Two-thirds of Americans believe that wealthy individuals and corporations have too much influence over our political system – and they’re right. The damaging effect of dark money and voter suppression continues to play out before our eyes thanks to decisions like Citizens United, but thankfully, the For the People Act offers a way out of this mess. With its focus on expanding voting rights more than ever before and sharply curbing the power of money in our political process, HR 1 should be a no-brainer for anyone with a stake in our democracy.” – Stephen Prince, founder and CEO of Card Marketing Services Inc. and Vice-Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires
“HR 1 was the very first bill introduced in this session of Congress, and it remains the most important. This bill champions the voting rights of all Americans and secures the campaign finance reform that we’ve all been waiting for. It’s an absolute disgrace that HR 1, a bill that would finally deliver the democracy we’ve been promised since 1776, has been lying dormant in the Senate for an entire year.” – Jackie Boberg, member of the Patriotic Millionaires.
