Patriotic Millionaire to Address New York City Council on Money in Politics

Until a candidate can run with only small donor contributions, the influence of big money in New York City politics cannot be fully eradicated

New York, NY – This afternoon Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and former managing director at Blackrock, will address the New York City Council Governmental Operations Committee to demand they support an increase in public funds matching small donor contributions. Immediately following his testimony, Mr. Pearl will speak at a campaign finance reform rally on the steps of New York City Hall, demonstrating to the Council the massive groundswell of support for small donor elections in the city.

The current New York City campaign finance system allows a candidate to run on small donor contributions with matching public funds up to certain point, but it does not go far enough. Politicians are too often beholden to donors instead of their constituents, so until a candidate can run with only small donor contributions, the influence of big money in New York City politics will continue. A portion of Mr. Pearl’s remarks are included below.

“The New York City campaign finance system has done a great deal to shift power to the people, and has literally changed the face of this building — or at least the faces in this building, but more must be done. Until a candidate can run with only small donor contributions, the influence of big money in New York City politics cannot be fully eradicated. Your bill, which equalizes the cap on expenditures and the total amount a candidate can receive from small donations plus matches, is a massive step forward towards ensuring our politicians are accountable to the people, not to wealthy donors and corporations,” said Morris Pearl, Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires.
