Patriotic Millionaires Criticize Congressional Democrats for Agreeing to CR Without Protecting IRS Funding

“It’s disappointing that at a time when Democrats should be doing everything they can to push back against Republican overreach, they’re appeasing them instead.

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Congressional Democrats reached a tentative deal to keep the government funded for the next three months through a continuing resolution that continues more than $20 billion in funding cuts for the IRS that were contained in the last fiscal year’s budget. Rather than fighting to preserve one of the most important pieces of the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats are poised to provide the majority of votes for a short-term government funding bill that will help unwind one of the signature accomplishments of the Biden era: cracking down on rich tax cheats.

Morris Pearl, Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement about the letter campaign:

“Congressional Democrats have apparently decided to join forces with the Republicans to cancel IRS funding for increased enforcement to hold wealthy tax cheats accountable. It’s disappointing that at a time when Democrats should be doing everything they can to push back against Republican overreach, they’re appeasing them instead. The American people might just conclude that both parties agree that the wealthy should just decide for themselves how much taxes to send in, rather than being held to the same standard as ordinary Americans who actually work for a living and have taxes deducted from their paychecks every week.

If Democrats want to tell the voters that there really is a difference between the parties, they need to use every bit of leverage they have, and their votes, to demonstrate that they really are willing to make the rich pay what they owe.”
