Patriotic Millionaires International Celebrate Lula Victory in Brazil
“Patriotic Millionaires across the globe stand for democracy and fair elections, and against authoritarian policies that destabilize our world and contribute to growing inequality.”
Washington, DC – Responding to the news that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has won the Brazilian election, Morris Pearl of Patriotic Millionaires International said:
“Free and fair elections in any country should be celebrated by people in every country. The growing trend of nationalist and antidemocratic forces sowing division and undermining democracy is a disturbing one, and the outcome of the Brazilian election is a positive shift away from this and for democracies across the world.
Jair Bolsonaro has consistently accused Brazil’s electoral process of being compromised without any evidence, made baseless claims of electoral fraud, and said that he may not accept the results of this year’s election. Da Silva, on the other hand, has committed to respecting and protecting Brazil’s electoral process.”
While Bolsonaro has yet to concede victory to Lula, the incoming President has committed to representing the whole country on the basis of international cooperation and actions to address inequality.
Pearl added: “Patriotic Millionaires across the globe stand for democracy and fair elections, and against authoritarian policies that destabilize our world and contribute to growing inequality. New leadership in Brazil promises a better world for all of us – one that deals with huge global issues such as climate change, global trade, and the need to prioritize policies that reduce extreme wealth concentration. As a leading country in South America, and working as part of the G20, we look forward to the leadership Lula’s Brazil aims to deliver.”
