SCOTUS Dobbs Decision Will Create a “Reproductive and Economic Apartheid”
“At a time when so much of our society and economy are separating into haves and have-nots, this decision ensures that the latter group will continue to fall further behind.”
Washington, DC – In response to last week’s Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs V. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:
“The Supreme Court just thrust the United States into a reproductive and economic apartheid. The Court’s ruling that the Constitution no longer guarantees a right to an abortion condemns countless Americans to untold hardships, and, unless overruled by Congress, will create an economic catastrophe for millions. At a time when so much of our society and economy are separating into haves and have-nots, this decision ensures that the latter group will continue to fall further behind.
Easy access to safe and reliable reproductive healthcare, including abortions, is a critically important piece of the happy, healthy, and prosperous lives of millions of Americans. Taking away this fundamental right does not just dramatically worsen health outcomes, it also leaves the most poor and vulnerable even more economically disadvantaged. This ruling affects every American, but it will disproportionately hurt those living in states with anti-abortion laws who do not have the financial means to travel to another state. Removing access to abortions makes it harder for them to afford higher education, pursue a fulfilling career, move themselves up the socioeconomic ladder, or even provide the most basics needs for themselves and their families.”
