Senate Dems Can’t Let Republicans Stand in the Way of Democracy Reform
“With the Republican party dedicated to obstruction at all costs, Democrats must now go it alone in order to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and save our democracy.”
WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon, Senate Republicans voted to block debate on the Freedom To Vote Act and prevent it from receiving a floor vote. In response, Morris Pearl the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans proved yet again today that they have no interest in preserving our democracy. This is now the third time in recent months that Senate Republicans have blocked meaningful and transformative voting rights legislation and abused Senate rules to not even allow a debate on the issue.
The vast majority of Americans support the Freedom to Vote Act, and for good reason. Americans understand that we need to stop gerrymandering, curtail the influence of big money in politics, safeguard our election officials from partisan intimidation, and make it easier – not harder – for people to cast their votes in elections.
With the Republican party dedicated to obstruction at all costs, Democrats must now go it alone in order to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and save our democracy. This is one of the most important fights in modern American history, and there can be no more excuses. They cannot allow outdated Senate norms like the filibuster to stand in the way of much-needed reform. Senate Democrats must get this bill passed and act in the best interest of the American people. They must pass this bill or the onslaught of anti-democratic legislation coming out of Republican-controlled states may ensure that they never hold power again. ”
