A Closer Look: Young people need the Working Americans’ Tax Cut Act
As a still-young (kinda) person myself, and the mother of a young person who will be starting his college journey next year, I worry a lot about what we are doing—and more importantly, not doing!—to ensure that young people still have a chance at the American Dream.
It's only been five weeks, but the good news on unions just keeps piling up—so much so that we feel we are in for a repeat of the summer of 2023. You may remember that was what organizers called “Hot Labor Summer,” given the historic victories that unions notched for workers across a variety of industries.
Here are a few of the ways that the Working Americans Tax Cut Act, or WATCA for short (S. 4083/HR 7937) provides a boost to hardworking low-income households while avoiding the pitfalls of other proposals.
We saw the interview that you gave last week to Andrew Ross Sorkin on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” and wanted to respond to some of the things you said that relate to our three-pronged mission to tax the rich, pay the people, and spread the power. There are places we agree, and areas we do not. We hope that you will approach this letter with an open mind, and consider joining us in our work.
A Closer Look: “Recession indicators” are right on the money
“Recession indicators” have been all the rage on social media over the last month. To avid scrollers, anything that was popular during the 2008 financial crisis that’s now making a comeback – from knee-high Converse sneakers, to Lady Gaga being back on the charts, to “Mamma Mia!” being back on Broadway – all signify that a recession is looming in America.
Recently, members of Congress, part of the Blue Dog caucus, published an op-ed in The Hill, asking readers: Our constituents have to balance their budgets every month—why can’t the federal government do the same?
A Closer Look: Honor Juneteenth by ending the subminimum wage
Happy Juneteenth! Today marks the fourth year that the United States has celebrated Juneteenth as an official federal holiday, which commemorates the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas at the end of the Civil War.
Historically, unions have always played an essential role in stabilizing economies and ensuring that businesses properly share the fruits that their workers’ labor produces. But, over the last four months, it’s become clear that unions are also integral to stabilizing democracies and spreading political power among the masses too.
A Closer Look: Trump’s Unprecedented Self-Enrichment
We talk all the time about how President Trump bends over backwards to help boost the bottom lines of his billionaire friends. It’s about time that we discussed how Trump is moving mountains to benefit one billionaire in particular, and his favorite billionaire at that: himself.
A Closer Look: Don’t fall for the idea that the rich pay their fair share
When you’re in a war and expecting your enemy to attack, sometimes you have to launch a preemptive strike. That’s exactly what we’re going to do with conservatives’ ideas on tax fairness now that we’re fully engaged in the 2025 tax war.
A Closer Look: Republicans are on tax offense for Team Rich
The “Super Bowl of Tax” is finally here. While Republicans haven’t passed their massive package, nor has President Trump signed anything yet, from what we’re seeing so far of their plans, there’s no doubt that they’re quarterbacking to give more tax handouts to wealthy people like us.
A Closer Look: Philanthropy can’t save the world. Taxes can.
You may think that Bill Gates is doing the world an enormous service by giving away nearly all of his fortune over the next twenty years. But the truth is that he’d be doing us all an even greater service if he spent a portion of his remaining time and money doing everything he can to change our country’s political economy to ensure that wealth isn’t concentrated in the hands of so few people and that, in the future, no single individual is able to attain his level of wealth and power in the first place.
It’s not often we need to email you on a Monday, so if we are, it has to be for a good reason. And believe us, we have one: May 11, 2025 marked the official launch of Patriotic Millionaires Canada!
America’s Most Regressive Tax Levy: Our Tax on Capital Gains
Our current effective tax rate on capital gains shrinks as the gains grow in size and duration, inviting the tax dodge — Buy–Hold for Decades–Sell — that’s driving America’s wealth concentration.
A Closer Look: Unlike Trump, We Did Our Homework on Taxes
Unlike President Trump and congressional Republicans, we’re not letting go of our proposal to raise taxes on the rich. While they may have ideas and “concepts of a plan,” we are the ones with a legitimate, well-constructed legislative agenda that will deliver real and substantive relief to working people.
