DC Patriotic Millionaires Slam Mendelson Bill to Overturn Initiative 77: “This is a Betrayal to Voters in the District”
“The people of the District are already deeply disenfranchised on a national level, now it looks like the Council wants to make sure their votes don’t count on local issues either.”
Washington, DC – This afternoon, in response to DC Council Chair Mendelson releasing legislation to repeal the recently-passed Initiative 77, the Patriotic Millionaires of DC released the following statement:
“Chairman Mendleson’s bill to overturn the will of the voters is undemocratic, questionally motivated, and completely unnacceptable. Initiative 77 won with a nearly 11.5% margin of victory, with thousands around the city turning out to give tipped workers a raise. The choice of the voters was clear and unambiguous, yet now the Council wants to overturn their decision on behalf of well-funded restaurant industry front groups and lobbyists.
The people of the District are already deeply disenfranchised on a national level, now it looks like the Council wants to make sure their votes don’t count on local issues either. This bill is a betrayal to voters in the District, plain and simple, and any Councilmember who commits to supporting it should be ashamed of themselves.”
