Patriotic Millionaires on Janus v. AFSCME: “An Assault on the American Worker”

“This is an assault on the labor movement, full stop, and should not be commemorated as anything less.”

Washington, DC – Today, the US Supreme Court released a 5-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME stating that union contracts can not require all workers to share the costs of the union’s collective bargaining. This is part of the unmistakable pattern of attacks on the American worker under the Republican controlled Congress, White House, and US Supreme Court. In response to this hotly anticipated ruling, Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and former managing director at Blackrock, Inc., Morris Pearl said:

“The decision today made by the US Supreme Court in the Janus v. AFSCME case marks a victory in the decades long Republican campaign to undermine the labor movement. Unfortunately though, it is a victory for everyone except the American worker. This is an assault on the labor movement, full stop, and should not be commemorated as anything less.

As public sector unions lose funding, they will lose the resources necessary to effectively bring forward negotiations on behalf of workers. By telling each individual worker, that the money from their union dues can be better spent on their family, they can destroy the union, and then lower the income of all of the workers.”
