“Senate Republicans are Running Scared”
“Voters know they’re getting screwed by this Congress, and McConnell doesn’t want the PR nightmare of dozens of negative town halls in August”
Washington, DC – This afternoon, following the news that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has decided to cancel most of the Senate’s August recess, the Patriotic Millionaires released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans are running scared. Mitch McConnell’s decision to cancel the August recess doesn’t come from a full legislative agenda and a busy schedule, it comes from a place of fear. Fear of Democrats reclaiming the Senate in November, and fear of him and his colleagues being held accountable by their constituents in August town halls.
The August recess is typically a time for Senators to hold town halls and meet with voters in their districts, but Mitch McConnell knows that Republican Senators aren’t going to be welcomed with open arms by their constituents. Last year’s tax bill, their only real legislative achievment, has done almost nothing to help the majority of Americans. Voters know they’re getting screwed by this Congress, and McConnell doesn’t want the PR nightmare of dozens of negative town halls in August.
We’re ready to be proven wrong, however. We eagerly await McConnell’s next announcement that, because they’re going to be so busy passing legislation and confirming nominees, Senate Republicans will be canceling all fundraising activity in the month of August.”
