Patriotic Millionaires on TX Redistricting Case: “An Insult to the American Constitution”

“Absurd that the highest legal authority in our country moves to allow state to disenfranchise Americans”

Washington, DC – This morning, in response to the Supreme Court’s 5 to 4 decision to reverse a lower court ruling that struck down the GOP drawn congressional map in Texas for discriminating against Black and Latino voters, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires Morris Pearl, former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:

“Today the Supreme Court disregarded the Voting Rights Act and gave more power to those who want to disenfranchise minority voters. Given three chances to reverse the nationwide effort to disenfranchise voters through gerrymandering, the Supreme Court has dropped the ball. In this final case, the Supreme Court has yet again ruled in favor of the wealthy elite who want to make it harder for the poor to make their votes matter.

Texas has one of the most racially gerrymandered maps in our country, and the refusal to enforce the constitutional rights of minority voters in Texas, while the state legislature is purposely denying them equal political representation, is an insult to the American constitution. It is absurd that the highest legal authority in our country continually moves to allow states to disenfranchise Americans and vulnerable communities.”
