Patriotic Millionaires Denounce Senate Judiciary Committee Postponing Vote on Leo, Crow Subpoenas

Credible concerns have been raised by multiple objective sources about these specific billionaires and their unseemly – and possibly illegal – influence on the Court. The idea that these questions should remain unanswered is absurd on its face.”

Washington, DC – Today, after Republicans filed dozens of amendments, the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a planned vote to authorize subpoenas for Leonard Leo and Harlan Crow, two influential conservative figures, as part of its Supreme Court Ethics investigation.

In response, Morris Pearl, the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires and a former managing director at BlackRock, Inc., released the following statement:

“The Judiciary Committee must ignore blatant obstruction by Republican senators and advance their investigation into alleged corruption of Supreme Court Justices by issuing subpoenas for Leonard Leo and Harlan Crow without delay.

Supreme Court Justices make decisions that affect every aspect of American life but are unelected and serve lifetime appointments. It is therefore imperative that these Justices receive appropriate oversight from Congress. Credible concerns have been raised by multiple objective sources about these specific billionaires and their unseemly – and possibly illegal – influence on the Court. The idea that these questions should remain unanswered is absurd on its face. The stability of our capitalist democracy requires a Court that adheres to the highest legal and ethical standards. The people who decide the law must never be allowed to operate above the law.”
